Software more than anything else created by man tends to mimic the very nature that surrounds us.  Through constant iterations it evolves, each new version number akin to each new generation of a species.  Small revisions and, from time to time, major changes, transform applications over time.  As they evolve they increase in scope and capability, and hopefully, become a better resource for the users.  But the downside to all of this is that the end user has to deal with the changes and new features which requires a sort of enforced continuing education regime.  We all know what it is like to migrate to yet another new version of the operating system we use every day.
